Social Media is Over 40 Years Old!

by Craig White on October 11, 2011

Social Media on the Internet is over 40 years old!

I know that’s a crazy statement to some folks out there but it is 100% accurate.
Stick with me on this one it gets a little technical.

“The earliest ideas for a computer network intended to allow general communications among computer users were formulated by the computer scientist J. C. R. Licklider, of the Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) company, in August 1962, in memoranda discussing his concept for an “Intergalactic Computer Network”. Those ideas contained almost everything that composes the contemporary Internet.”

You can read the entire history here if you would like.

This post is not meant to be a complete history of the Internet but to show you that the Internet was originally created for the use of sharing ideas between 2 or more people at different locations by sending messages across a network of computers.

What a great Idea! You mean I can send a 140 character message to friends of mine at different locations and share my thoughts and possibly some great information that might be useful to them? I wish someone would have came up with this years ago!

Sound familiar?

OK! I will get to my point.

Social Media was invented over 40 years ago by computer scientist so they could share important information instantly with their colleagues and co-workers at different locations around the world to help each other gain better knowledge of the projects they were working on together.

Lets break it down:
Social-Attitudes, orientations, or behaviours which take the interests, intentions, or needs of other people into account.

MediaIn communication, media (singular medium) are the storage and transmission channels or tools used to store and deliver information or data. It is often referred to as synonymous with mass media or news media, but may refer to a single medium used to communicate any data for any purpose.[1][2][3]

So here is my proof.

In 1962 J.C.R. Licklider created a network of computers to Socially interact by taking in account the needs of other people and sharing this information by using a single source of Media to communicate any data for any purpose. Hence the beginning of Social Media.

OK already! You get the picture.

Here is my real reason for writing this post. Social media was originally created to share useful information between 2 or more people. The key word here is useful. So get ready this one’s going to hurt a little. Every time I get on Twitter or Facebook all I see is a bunch of links and tweets of affiliate messages and whole bunch of other crap that doesn’t really help anyone looking to share information. Yes I have done the same thing but I finally realized this when a friend of mine on Facebook told me  “Stop with the Business Craig and have some fun with us!” I instantly knew at that point that I was not sharing any information that she was interested in.

So here are some basic do’s and don’ts if you are going to use Social Media in your marketing strategy.

  • Don’t spam affiliate links
  • If you are going to post a self serving link it should be done no more that 1 out of every 15 links or post.
  • Your self serving link should only be to an article or site that would help someone looking for that type of information
  • Doe share things that you are truly interested in
  • Don’t post 15 times in a row. This only shows that you are posting just to post not to actually share anything interesting.

Well I hope that helped clear a few things up for those of you using Social Media as a Marketing Strategy.
